Default Dean Smith's big calls - How Aston Villa could line up against Birmingham City

Dean Smith's big calls - How Aston Villa could line up against Birmingham City

188bet Its the hottest ticket in town - every Aston Villa player is itching to play on derby day. Dean Smith cant select them all with a maximum of 14 claret and blues privileged enough to play in the 127th Second City derby against Birmingham City. The teams are neck and neck in the Championship and perhaps the most evenly matched they have been in years. Having said that, theres little doubt Smith possesses the squad with greater depth and quality. But which names will he scribble down on a wall at Bodymoor Heath on Friday afternoon?

Injury worries
Smith has three doubts ahead of the derby with captain James Chester, Neil Taylor and midfield machine John McGinn all nursing problems. Chester picked up an injury shortly after half-time in Wales defeat to Switzerland last weekend and couldnt continue. 188bet He will be assessed alongside international team-mate Neil Taylor who wasnt fit enough to join up with Ryan Giggs side. McGinn had to pull out of Scotland duty with a groin injury and Smith will be desperate for him to be passed fit to face Blues.

Selection dilemmas
If any of Chester, Taylor and McGinn dont make it, their replacements are clear. Mile Jedinak will have to play at centre-back, Alan Hutton will shift across to left-back with Ahmed Elmohamady operating at right-back, and Birkir Bjarnason or Glenn Whelan will come in for McGinn. If the trio are passed fit, 188bet Smith only really has one decision to make following that excellent display at Derby County in which Villa blew away a promotion favourite.
